Knowing that Budapest was badly bombed during 2nd world war, it is a pleasant surprise to see how well it had rebuilt the city. With grand buildings, churches and palaces dotted around, it is easy to see how rich and proud it was during the Austro Hungarian period.
Hilly Buda side is linked to flat Pest side by a few graceful hanging bridges across Danube, for both car and pedestrian use.
Walking up to Castle Hill in Buda side, first thing to
draw my attention is Fisheerman’s Bastion, a walkway along the edge with
a panoramic view of Danube, hanging briges and sprawling Pest.
Especially charming to come at night to see the Parliament building light up on the other side of the river.
Matthias
church and palaces with their unique colour roof tiles deserve a good
walk around. All are what remains of Buda Castle, first built in the
14th century, after numerous destructions, modifications and additions.
Next
to Buda Castle is Gellert Hill, accessed by a grand stone staircase,
with status along the way and more at the top. The view of Danube and
the bridges are gorgeous.
