Nyhaven - the most typical tourist photo of Copenhagen is taken here, beautiful row of colourful small buildings along a canal. It is also where I see most tourists, feel very crowded, the rest of Copenhagen is not like this at all.
Christiansborg- the current 18th C palace built on
top of previous castles. Rooms are big and high ceiling, decoration is
grand with a lot of new updated furnishings like the impressive set of
tapestries to celebrate the Queen’s 60th anniversary. Some rooms are
still used for state events.
Ruin- at the basement there is clear
description of the transformation from a small castle in the 12 C to
the current state, with exposed stone walls and structures to show.
Torvehallerne food market - 2 long buildings selling fresh produce and cooked food. A lot to choose from, but what got my attention are seafood stalls. Tried local oysters, grilled scallops, blueberry pickled and curry pickled herring, all delicious.
Round tower - tall round tower acting as entrance to church behind. The tower is unique with a sloping floor instead of steps, specially designed for horse drawn carriage to get up.
Canal boat trip - joined a canal boat tour with explanation of the buildings and bridges along the canals. Very lively talk and really worth the time to have an overview of the landscape and seeing it from the water.
Dansk
Architecture museum - the view from the top floor cafe over the canal
is fantastic, Copenhagen is a spacious capital, green with trees and
blue with water, and sky, we are also very lucky to have sunny weather.
The
exhibition on recycling is interesting, the focus is to encourage
renewing a building instead of tearing it down and rebuild. Last resort
is to at least reuse materials before destroying the building, sort of
how we used to do in the old days.
