Restaurants Elkano, Kaia and Astillero at Getaria, near San Sebastian, Spain

These are the 3 best seafood restaurants in Getaria, I have been visiting them regularly in the past few years. For me, the best time to go is in the winter months, late Oct to April, when it is the shellfish season.

The key is to order only the seafood that is in season, that they are going to cook fresh, not their pre-prepared dishes.

Some of my favourite dishes are:

1. Percebes - a type of barnacle from Galicia, very little flesh but excellent marine taste (quick blanched).

2. Camerones - small shrimps from around Getaria, firm sweet meat, beautiful colour and pattern (steamed).

3. Necora - small crab from around Getaria, though very small, it is surprisingly packed with flesh and very sweet (steamed).

4. Spider crab - the one from Galicia is better, it has dark purple-red shell (versus the orange red from around Getaria), a lot of flesh in its body and legs and very sweet (steamed).

5. Squid - the small ones -chipirones (4/5inches) are best (grilled on charcoal).
6. Turbot - wild turbot is rare to find these days, tasty firm gelatinous white flesh (grilled).

7. Clams - tender and excellent marine taste (blanched).

Try their local white wine, Txacoli, very crisp & fresh, is good with the seafood.

If you order the above, the bill will be roughly the same in all three restaurants, medium expensive. Elkano has the most elegant setting and professional service, good bread and olive oil. Kaia has elegant setting, friendly service, and good bread. Astillero is pleasantly decorated but more local.

  1. Hello there, you have a lovely food blog with tons of information. I've bookmarked it for sure!

I'm surprised that you mentioned that the bill at all these 3 restaurants are the same. I was hoping that the price/kg is cheaper in Astillero than the other 2 restaurants. Well, if that is the case, I should just head straight to Elkano, no?

ps. Just a suggestion to improve your blog: it would be wonderful if you can tag your posts so that it is easier to navigate!

    Thank you!

  2. Hi WP,
If you eat what I shown in the photos, local catch, they will end up similar in price. Talk to the boss, who speaks English (Elkano & Kaia), ask for what are in season, freshly cooked, a lot of dishes are pre-cooked. Elkano can end up expensive if you eat their pre-cooked dishes,

I prefer to go to Kaiia, the young boss is friendly and shown me the warehouse where he kept seafood alive in tanks.

I am not very good with computer programing, I will find out what is 'tag your posts'and improve it, thanks for your comments.
