North Vietnam tour 6/6 memorable dishes

Vietnamese food is full of flavor and very affordable, here are some dishes I like very much.

I never though of using these tiny shrimps this way, stir fry with star fruit, soy sauce and Vietnamese coriander, so delicious and umami.

The specialty in Ninh Binh area is goat, love this stir-fried goat with a lot of lemon grass and chili.

Called mochi in Cat Ba island, shallow fried glutinous rice paste, crunch on the outside and gooey inside.

At Cat Ba island, the most memorable dish is local clams, very tasty blanched in lemongrass, Vietnamese coriander and chili broth.

Betal leaves wrapped mince, a unique flavor.

Clam pork balls, moist and umami, wonderful combination.

Coffee is super popular, the special egg coffee, mildly sweet whipped egg yolk on expresso is delicious, a rich mouth feel.

The next full day excursion started with 570 steps to the Moa Cave pagoda. The setting is beautiful with big stone steps rise steeply up the hill. It is exhausting to reach the top but the view is rewarding.

Then went to Bich Dong ancient temples, also built into the hill and have to walk up a shorter flight of stone steps. Graceful small temples that blend well with the surrounding.

In the afternoon, we join the Tam Coc boat tour, thinking that the scenery will be good. Unfortunately it is more commercial with road access and tearooms along part of the course. No comparison with yesterday’s Trang An tour. Luckily our driver guess that we will be bored and intercepted the boat on the return trip.

He drive us to Bird Valley, a bird sanctuary that also have a long walk in a cave, vegetable, fruit and flower gardens. The highlight was the boat trip to see where storks and herons nest. This nicely finished our sightseeing of Ninh Binh.

Lotus Field Homestay

Moved to south of Hanoi, an area with river and inland karst hill formation. Read that the towns are not interesting to stay in, so chose Lotus Field Homestay in the outskirts, a quiet location with fantastic view of karst hills.

Booked a private car for the next to tour the sites, us40, an affordable comfort.

First visited the Bai Dinh pagoda group, found out that it is a huge area of temples, pagodas and garden, the construction started 20 years ago. The view from the pagoda, tallest in Asia, is wonderful. Otherwise it is a soulless tourist attraction.

Far more interesting and worth visiting is the ancient temples group up in the hill at the far end of the area, probably why this development started.
Flights of steps brought you up the small forested hill with temples built inside caves and under rock, very atmospheric.

Next to visit is Hoa Lu complex, a large area with a few old buildings. We are not impressed with the architecture and the hordes of tourists are unpleasant, not worth our time.

After a good lunch, went for the Trang An boat tour. Very well organised to move tourists on to flat rowing boats, so the wait was not long.

We picked route 1 which went through 9 caves and visited 3 temples on the hills. It is the route visiting most caves and least buildings, let us see more of the national environment. Luckily it is the one with the least tourists and we avoided the eye sores of many boats in the view.

It is a fabulous experience to get into so many shallow caves, the roofs lined with stalactites and have eroded shapes. Very often we have to dug in order not to touch the roof.

The river and hills are in pristine condition, no development nor agriculture, it is nice to see it being preserved, and be enjoyed without much environmental impact.

Should be good to do it first thing in the early morning to avoid crowds.

North Vietnam tour 3/6 Cat Ba Island

Ha Long Bay

Lan Ha Bay

The next day we went to Cat Ba Island National Park and do a hike up Viet Hai Navy Hill, the highest point on the island. The steep climb 2km straight up rocky rough path is very challenging, normally I won’t want to attempt to do it. The panoramic views of Lan Ha Bay on one side and Ha Long Bay on the other side are memorable.

During free time, we use the kayak provided by the Homestay to paddle around the area.

Meals are provided by the Homestay, unfortunately tend to be mild tasting dishes catered to western tourists.
