Road trip back to Ireland-Caen 4/4

breakfast at Caen

The north coast of France means seafood to me, a place to enjoy the freshness seasonal catch, at the moment is scallop.

Went to this fishing port Port en Bessin Huppain, where a lot of scallop dredging boats are stationed. Scallop dredging in France is very well regulated, boats are given specific dates, hours and location to work, managed so that it is a sustainable harvest.

This is the place for a feast of scallops, Le Bistro d’a Cote, Port-en-Bessin-Huppain, Normandy France.

I had raw scallop, served with salad and a little sprinkle of zesty finger lime.

Cooked scallops were hot seared outside and still translucent inside, the best cooking degree, with an assortment of seasonal vegetables, perfect meal!

Road trip back to Ireland -Dijon 3/4

Back to good old France, a walk around Dijon reminded us of why we like France, lots of history, monuments and FOOD.

The indoor market filled with mind blogging displays of different cuts of meat, well prepared and attractively presented, same for seafood, cheese, veg, fruit, bread and pastry stall, all mouth watering.

Road trip back to Ireland -Luzern 2/4

Picked Luzern Switzerland because of it’s suitable location on the route home, and being next to river and lake always means good scenery. Quite shocked that it is such a big city, huge modern suburb, even the town center is pretty ‘modern’, not what I wished, quaint old buildings. On top, the old town is occupied by brand name boutiques, jewelry and watch shops, a very sorry sight.

Luckily the hotel receptionist mentioned the old city wall that is worth a visit. The wall and towers are in good condition and can walked to the top, for a spectacular view of the city, the hills and lake.

Near Luzern is the Aareschultch gorge walk, an hour return boardwalk hanging along one side of the gorge cliff surface, built 125 years ago, fantastic experience.

We are lucky with very sunny weather, took the world ‘s steepest cogwheel train 2000 m up to the top of Pilatus mountain. There are a number of easy paths in different directions to admire the views. Thoroughly enjoyed this 24 hours stay in Switzerland, gorgeous scenery, fantastic hiking opportunities, great public transport arrangement, we will come back!

Road trip back to Ireland -Pesciera del Garda 1/4

Plan to drive four to five hundred km per day on this return trip from Rovinj Croatia. The route is chosen for being relatively straight, mostly on motorway, and passes towns worth a stop. First stop is Italy, Pesciera del Garda, small town on the southern edge of the famous Lake Garda. The pentagon shaped fortress is a world heritage site, I have seen a few in Europe, but this is the first one being built at the edge of a lake, half in water.

Seafood lunch next to the sea

Can’t beat the atmosphere of having well prepared seafood meal right next to the sea.
Raw tuna in olive oil and salt, sardines in sweet sour sauce and cuttlefish risotto, at Kantinon, Rovinj, Croatia.

Cheese with black truffle

It is black truffle season in Istria, Croatia, served in most restaurants, and incorporated in different products.

My favourites are truffle crisps and truffle cheese , both carry the mild truffle aroma well.

A good use of truffle cheese is to make a creamy mild truffle sauce.

I bought fresh squid and fennel, made this squid ‘tagliatelle’ with cheesy truffle sauce and baked fennel.

3 ways to enjoy fresh langoustines

langoustines bisque

langouttines tagliatelle

Bought live langoustines at the little fish market in Rovinj, Croatia. Turned into 3 delicious dishes.

First, blanch one by one till the tail just curl up, enjoy crunchy sweet tail.

Second, cut up claws and together with tail shells, turn into bisque, with spinach and carrot added at the end.

Third, scrape out the uncooked fat from inside the head, cook in butter, a little bisque to serve as sauce for tagliatelle.
