Northwest Iceland - fresh fish at Hofsos

fresh fish at Hofsos

Went to the harbour at Hofsos when a fisherman is unloading his catch. There are a couple of boxes with strange looking round black fish and a box with plaice and cod. The fisherman is friendly and happy to chat, the black fish is not good to eat but get a good price for the eggs.

When asked if we can buy one plaice as there is nowhere to buy fresh fish, he refused to take money, but happy to give one free. Picked up a small piece of roe of that black fish too.

Seared plaice, the flesh is surprisingly juicy tender like soft tofu, one of the best I have eaten, and the fin bones are full of gelatinous juice.

After internet search, confirm the black one is lumpfish. There are indeed lumpfish roe in small jars in supermarkets everywhere in the world, most dyed black to imitate caviar, but they are naturally pale yellow and have a crunchy texture.
