Okinawa tour 1/4 Naha

We need a small dose of Japanese culture and of course food, to profit from the extremely good exchange rate, hence decide to have a short holiday in Okinawa, based in Naha.

Naha has a convenient monorail system that connects the airport to city centre. We stayed in a Airbnb that is close to a monorail stop and within easy walking distance to major sites in the city.

The major sites can be seen within a day.

Shurijo temple complex on the hill commands a grand view of the city. Unfortunately the main building was burnt down in 2019 and is being carefully restored into the same condition as before, it is still worth a walk round the walled area to see the remaining buildings.

Nearby is Tamaudun Mausoleum, a solemn place suitably designed for the purpose, simple and respectful.

Round the corner is one of the only remaining stone paved road, Kinjo stone road, from the 14th century built during the Ruyuku kingdom. It spirals down hill in a pocket of thickly tree lined neighborhood, very atmospheric.

Tsuboya, is traditionally a pottery production site in the centre, now with a lot of shops selling ceramic wares. There is only one old house, with a long slanting kiln, remained from that era.

There are two fish markets in the city, Makishi market in the middle and Tomari market at the harbour near the ferry terminal. Both have a variety of seafood and raw fish selection, can buy and have them cooked and eaten in the restaurants in the building. It is a practical arrangement and a good way to sample local seafood.
