Took 90 minutes water taxi from Belize City to the biggest island Ambergris, famous for sport fishing. My fisherman’s target is to catch (and release) Bone fish.
Water there is clear with various shades of blue. Unfortunately there are rubbish and sea grass blown on shore, spoiling the view.
At 6am, the pale sky has a reddish glow on the sea, then bright red sun rises on the horizon.
To escape sea grass, we drove a golf cart up north, on the
Caribbean Sea side to Tranquility Bay to swim, very shallow flat for a
long way, calm and warm, it is very pleasant to swim around. There are
some coral reefs quite near the shore. Otherwise, there are boat tours
to get close to various reefs.
Started catching Bone fish on these shallow water mangroves area. Very
lucky to have fished a big Trevally, at roughly 10kg the second night at
the pier, we will have it for many dinners.
The next day we explore the west side of the island, the side facing
mainland, famous for being shallow, and super calm all the time.
It
is a swampy side of the island, with only one road to cut across to
Secret Beach on that side. Must be a secret a long while ago, now very
commercial and full of tourist traps.
There are roads spreading either sides of Secret Beach to newer beaches, both needs to walk across wasteland to get to. It is worth the effort, true secluded private beaches just the two of us.
I enjoy very much peaceful swimming in super calm warm sea, with nobody around. Wonderful that my fisherman finds the lagoons nearby are great fly fishing locations for bone fish too.
