Travel souvenirs

Other than food ingredients, I do not buy souvenirs when traveling. The only thing that I will happily bring back is seed, to try to grow in my garden. Sometimes I buy them in the market, more often I eat fruits and save the seeds.

Here are some successful plants:

Seville oragne
Spain Seville orange, the bitter orange that English uses to make marmalade
Sicily pomegranate
Sicily pomegranate, 6 years now, it grows really slowly

Australia pecan
Australia pecan, it had been living in the green house for 6 years before I planted it out in the field 2 years ago.
Pero Zapote

This is a local fruit with cream flesh and huge stone, very easy to germinate, but not easy to survive in cool winter, a few previous attempts have failed.

Peru avocado
Peru Trujillo avocado, a small variety that grows there, up in the hills, may survive cooler winter, I hope.

Myanmar tamarind
Myanmar Bagan tamarind, ate them from a wild tree, all 6 seeds germinated.

Hawaii papaya
Hawaii papaya, ate this small sweet papaya in Hong Kong and saved the seeds, germinated very well and grow fast.

Except papaya which is a fast growing type, all the rest are slow growing when starting from seed, take a long time to mature and bear fruits. Which is why it is popular to have grafted trees so that they will bear fruits fast, like in 4 years.
