red amaranth and sweet potato cuttings in end July |
After digging out all the potatoes in mid
July, instead of leaving the ground bare and grows weeds, I decided to
transplant some cuttings from the existing 3 colours of sweet potato plants,
and also sown a handful of amaranth seed (莧菜)
just in case the cuttings didn't work, for some green
leaves to eat or at least as ground cover.

Both plants grew well and I had enjoyed
many meals of stir-fried amaranth and sweet potato leaves.
It is time to plant garlic in that strip of
land, to my amazement, every cuttings has a good bunch of sweet potatoes
underneath! Just barely 3 months and there is such a good harvest.

Other than
this is a super good growing year, I suspect the competition from amaranth helped
to stimulate sweet potato plants to store food (tubers) fast.
