Travelling is really a good way to learn history, in Chester I learned the presence of Roman Empire, which was the reason behind the establishment of Chester.
Only the groundwork of the amphitheatre is left, and a garden nearby, and remnants of some Roman wall foundations in various parts of the city.
During Roman Britain, the Romans developed Chester as a strategic location near River Dee, at that time deep and wide. The plan is to use Chester as a base to conquer Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
These sea routes made Chester prosperous, but river Dee gradually silted and became unsuitable for sailing. Nearby river Mersey and Liverpool was chosen as replacement, leading to the fall of Chester and the rise of Liverpool.
