Arranged transport for a day to explore the north west coast of Tainan, a big fish and oyster farming area.
四草綠色隧道-boat trip in a mangrove tunnel
Part of the
coast was a mangrove area, gradually silted, then cleared to make for
fish farming. This is a patch of mangrove left in the form of a tunnel
that a flat bottom boat can glide past. Beautiful tree branches that
cross over at the top covering the sky, and a habitat for seabirds.
鹿耳門天后宮
This sea goddess temple erected at the harbour where Chinese Navy general Cheng landed and finally evicted the Dutch. The temple roofs are packed full of sculpture, very vivid, very colourful and well made. The whole building inside and out are highly decorated, so much details, the most impressive temple I have seen in Tainan.
正統鹿耳門聖母宮
Strangely not very far away, this is another later built temple also for worshipping the same sea goddess. It covers a large area with many buildings and connecting bridges. It is big and not very pretty place with daily music, dance performances etc., not worth the time.
七股鹽山 Qiquo salt mountain
This coast is famous for
production of salt until a hundred years ago when cheaper salt from
other countries flooded the market. What is left in this site is a mountain of salt, that has been compressed by rain, wind and human traffic.
水晶宮 Crystal Palace and other installations
A
simple structure of beams and glass that forms the silhouette of a
church, attracting wedding couples to come for photo shooting. Nearby is two more installations, one a giant fishing trap and the other a triple
rings structure.
井仔腳瓦盆鹽田
Another sea salt production area that is still working. The square are panes of salt water in different degrees of dehydration. Very beautiful reflections in the setting sun.
