A three weeks holiday in Guadeloupe to escape Irish winter, it is a French colony.
Picked St Anne area on the big island to start the journey. There is a nice long beach to relax in, lined at the back by many food stalls and restaurants.
At the eastern tip is Pointe de Chateaux, with a hiking route and a few view points, for the dramatic seascapes.
Guadeloupe is windy, which makes it comfortable at 30 degrees Celsius, and driving inland, we can see a lot of ruins of windmills, once used to crush sugar cane for sugar and rum production.
These big fish traps are
common sight near harbour, the first time I see such dimensions. The
traditional ones made with tree branches are especially beautiful.
The biggest town in this island, Pointe a Pitre, where the international airport and ferry terminal is located, is pretty run down. Quite a pity, as the traditional buildings, those rare few that are looked after, have big balconies with delicate metal railing works, very suitable for tropical climate.
