On the way to the next stop, round the corner to
south Australia Windy Harbour, went to Hamelin bay to see Sting Ray. It
is a beautiful long beach known to have sting rays swimming in shallow
water. Indeed saw two big and one small ones swimming back and forth,
not disturbed by viewers close by.
Next is Cape Leeuwin near
Augusta, with a lighthouse. Wind swept wild coast with large area of
fragrant shrubs, no human structures.
Windy Harbour is is surrounded by National Parks, a small off grid settlement near the sea, very windy as one can expect from the name.
Windy Harbour is good for fishing, whiting at the moment.
Went hiking in Shannon NP to see big trees, some 90m tall amd over 300 years old, Jarret, Marri and Karri, all in the Eucalyptus family. The best specimens are in the Big Tree Grove in the Great Forest Trees Drive. It is a pleasure to see them up close to feel how giant they are.
Later take the 1 hour return hike up to the top of Mount Chudalup. It is a bare rounded granite hill popped out from a sea of eucalyptus trees. At 195 m high, it offers a 360 degrees panoramic view of the forested national park around.
A
great way to see the coast is to visit the various Lookouts near Windy
Harbour. The best we liked are Window Lookout with a fantastic view of
the rugged coastline and an exposed stalactites arch formation from a
collapsed cave.
With a clear sky, the Salmon Bay Lookout is the perfect spot to sit and relax to see the waves crashing at the long bay below, and the orange sun sinking down into the sea.
