A hilly town famous of having Alhambra at the top of the hill. Immense structure built in the 11C by the Moorish invaders. A must to buy tickets well in advance, meaning at least 2 months ahead. We booked a month ahead and got the 7pm last visit to the Palace on our last day there.
On top of other monuments to visit,
the town spreads out on a few slopes, each with its character and
building styles. It is enjoyable to wander around the area, a feast for
the eyes.
Albaicin area is one of the most popular neighborhood on a slope, with various Miradors that offer views of the mountains and Alhambra, the most famous being Mirador San Nicholas.
Monasterio de San Jerónimo is definitely worth a visit, the cloister is beautiful but the church is mind bogglingly full of attractive decoration.
Puerta de Elvira is the only remaining gate of the once existing city wall.
Other major sites to visit are Royal chapel and Cathedral. Both are impressive but I have probably seen too many religious buildings by now, all seems deja vu.
