Pruning fruit trees during summer

Attended a course on pruning fruit trees. Normally the recommendation in gardening books is to prune in winter, when the tree is dormant, which is what I used to do in past years.

Learned from the course that if we would like to control the size of the tree, so that the branches are not too long, it is important to prune in summer, after fruit harvest.

The concept is, the tree base on the amount of leaves there is, will grow the root system accordingly. If we prune in winter, the root system had time to grow big, so when spring comes, the stored energy sees the need to grow branches and leaves to be equal, will push out a lot of vertical suckers.

Whereas if we prune in summer, the size of the root system will grow in proportion to the top, so that next spring, the energy will be used to grow flowers.
