Harvesting hops

hop plants

An organic artisan beer maker who grow all the necessary ingredients for making beer, wheat, barley and hops, asked for help in harvesting hops. The young man inherited a barn and a small piece of farmland decided that he can make use of them to make beer, still new in France.

He has around 100plants, hop being a long creeper, it will take an hour to remove all the flower heads from one plant.

fresh hops (Cascade)

It is the first time I smell fresh hops, one variety has a citrus and sweet aroma, the other one is sweet and balsamic. It is hop varieties and different degree of roasting of grains that give beer the unique flavor. There is quite a lot to play with in making beer.

It is an easy job when there is a large group of people to help. Surprisingly most who came to help are middle aged couples, from AMAP food groups in the area.
