I used to find it hard to know when to harvest pears,
as they stay hard when hanging on the tree, only when picked and rested during
storage then they will go soft.
It is good to read James Wong's gardening book, he has
an easy to follow rule. When pear grows to a good standard size and has some
red blush, lift it up gently, if the stalk is hard it will break automatically from
the tree, meaning ready for harvest.
