Touring Norway - Day 18 route 55 Lom to Tyin and Jotunheimen NP

Route 55 is another highland pass that crosses the mountain range separating east and west Norway, famous for having out of the world scenery.

First stop is Krossbu in Jotunheimen NP. Recommended by the staff a hiking trail that leads up a gentle slope to right next to Boverbreen glacier. It is easy to see glacier in Norway, but hard to get close to touch it.

This is a great opportunity, the trail is 3 hours return, goes up 300m in 3km. It is not steep, but not a smooth path too , muddy, rocky, shallow waterway, puddles and a final climb on steep irregular rocky ridges.

Seeing a glacier up close is spectacular, the icy curves , the ice tunnel, the glowing blue light under thick ice is so beautiful. The deep crevices on the glacier surface is lethal, can go a long way down. Walking on glacier is available with a guide and with special shoes. I have done that in Argentina and do not need to repeat that experience.

For me the 3 hours return trip is tiring as I am worried of slipping all the time, but appreciate the unique glacier experience.

Carry on route 55, passing snow capped mountains, and then twist and turn up and down the 1460m pass, highest in north Europe. The view is amazing all along, at a view point, very closeby, are rugged mountains all around.

All the way down many switchbacks to Ardals, an industrial town next to a fjord,

Take another set of zigzags over another mountain range to Tyin, passing bare rocks on mossy fields wild landscape,

Stayed next to a river near Tyonosen.
