Ireland Connemara tour 2/3 - Omey island and Derrigiimlagh bog walk

So lucky that weather holds, went for the drive along Sky Road, the best view of Connemara coast line, with many islands dotted around.

Then head to Omey island, where you can reach at low tide walking across the sandy beach, a good experience. Wander around the island that once had 400 plus habitants, last one left in 1962. The island is not big and just can’t support so many people especially after the famine a hundred years ago.

In the afternoon, went to Derrigimlagh bog area, for a different environment plus a lot of important history of the area.

The land is covered by peat and easy to spot trenches where it is still (!) collected for use in heating, in a controlled amount, supposedly.

Being a westerly sticking out point, this is the place where the first radio transmission was sent to USA, and also the first transatlantic flight from USA landed, the plane crashed but both pilots survived. They were Italians, who left there name in many buildings in the area, Alcock & Brown.
