Albany is the end of south coast tour, head back to west side via Albany highway to Perth then further north to Cervantes. Along the way from Perth to Cervantes, there are a lot of white sand dunes, and huge areas of burnt tree stumps.
It’s 650km away and took us from 8am to reach Cervantes at 4:30pm, just in time to get to Lobster Shack to buy a couple of local crayfish for dinner. It is a huge company operating there to gather and prepare lobsters for local (tourist) consumption and export, alive, frozen or cooked.
The bay and jetty at Cervantes is disappointingly unattractive, so rare in this trip.
The highlight in the area is The Pinnacles at Nambung NP. It is inland and much hotter than at the coast. Went there at 7:30 am to enjoy cooler temperature and no tourists. It is great to enjoy the strange rock formations, quite like moonscape, all by ourselves, the solitude suits the environment.
Then went to Lake Thetis to look at stromatolites, flat round structures built by the earliest microbes that inhabit earth since 350,000 million years ago, able to photosynthesis and releasing oxygen. They cement minerals from sand and rocks to make sedimentary layers that very slowly grow to the current form.
Nearby walk to Hanson Bay Lookout, to see the bluest blue sea, and salt/gypsum flats from dried sea water that flowed into coastal depressions.
The last stop is walking up and around super white sand dunes at Sandy Cape. Fine white sand in huge contrast with deep blue sea, a scene that makes us stop and admire the view for a long time.
