Sri Lanka tour 3/9 Anuradhapura

Starts the trip to visit this UNESCO site at 7:30, it is 90 minutes away by private car US 60 arranged by hotel, self guiding with our book.

Anuradhapura was built during the early Sri Lankan kingdom, from 2 BC to 900 AD when eventually defeated by neighbour Indians.

The Dagoba (Stupa) was built to convert locals to worship Buddha. There are 3 big ones from that period, using bricks as building material. These were the tallest brick buildings in that era, their height only surpassed by some pyramids.

They are indeed impressive structures lying in different parts of Anuradhapura Temple area, needing the car to deliver us from one to the other.

In the area there were a lot of pillars left from monastery buildings easy to imagine how grand this large area used to be.

In one part is an ancient Bo tree, the roots are over 2000 years old.

In another area is a well carved stone Buddha. Further along is a well maintained and decorated twin bath…… the area is large and we spent over 3 hours wandering around from one site to the other, well worth the effort.

Tried Ambula, rice and curry feast by this hotel chef, a grand one curry meat and 9 accompanying veg dishes, delivered in a rattan trolley. Nice to eat some varieties of vegetables.
