Sri Lanka tour 6/9 Mulkirigala Rock temple

A long drive down south to Tangalla coast, a last minute change of schedule because of the cyclone in end November causing serious landslides in the central mountain area near Kandy where we planned to go.

Saying at Buckingham Place resort at Rekawa beach, very nice set up with an extra long infinity pool between the beach and the restaurant. The tastefully painted buildings attracted peacocks to come every morning to show off their feathers.

Early morning kayak ride in the lagoon at the back of the hotel, very calm, some birds and a few fishermen.

In the afternoon, visited Mulkirigala Rock temple. Buddha statues installed in rooms built under huge overhanging rock ledges, and bright and colourful murals painted on all walls and ceilings. There are 5 of these rooms at different heights of the steep hill.

The temples were built near the top of the hill reaching via first, a long flights of stairs, then more steps and stairs carved into the near vertical steep rock hill, a fantastic experience well worth the trip.

On the way back, we stop at the side of a busy road where the trees are full of resting fruit bats. They are waiting for the light to dim for their evening feeding. A magnificent sight but cause a lot of damage to fruit farmers.

Dinner :

Excellent cooking at this hotel, we tried most of the brunch and dinner dishes, both local and western favorites, good ingredients, tasty and beautifully presented.
