Sri Lanka tour 7/9 Nature reserves

Get going at 5:30 am to reach Kalametiya nature lagoon bird safari by 6:30, the sky just starting to brighten.

Best time for bird watching as they are out for feeding.

Using rowing boats, very calm quiet lagoon, with a lot of lily and sea hyacinth filling up the water surface.

We are equipped with binoculars and the guide points out the birds around. So many birds around, a most delightful 2 hours in this serene environment.

Back to hotel for brunch, rest and swim.

In the afternoon we went to Bundala nature reserve an hour away, to ride on a jeep to see wildlife. There are many lagoons hence a lot of birds too, on top we saw elephants, a lot smaller than the African variety, wild pig, deer, crocodiles, langur monkeys, tortoise.

The most memorable are beautiful fluorescent green bee eaters bird, so pretty and delicate. Also saw a lot of peacocks, the first time I see peacocks in the wild and one even fanning his tail in front of us to seduce females, such a memorable sight.

Another lovely dinner, morning walk along the fine sandy Rekawa beach (not a piece of rubbish in sight) and brunch before we say goodbye to this little paradise.
