Shikoku Japan 日本四國 tour- from Matsuyama 松山to Uwajima 宇和島市 4/12

Driving from Matsuyama to Uwajima in the west coast, we stopped at Uchiko ancient village, Ozu Garyu Sanso and Butsumoku ji.

Uchiko 內子町 ancient city is a few streets where the old houses, in wood with lime mud plaster are kept. Most of them are a shop in front and house at the back, residents work inside and sell their craft or produce to the passerby.

Some houses have a small strip of garden around, filled with bonsai and flowers, look very stylish in that ancient way.

Oxu Garyu Sanso 大洲臥龍山莊 is a purpose designed summer villa on top of a cliff with a river view. There is a main house, very open with terrace around, maximizing the view of river and garden.

There is another smaller pagoda, perched at the edge of the cliff, very well planned.

I like very much the touch of flower arrangement here and there, trees near the house, a lot of thought gone into building the villa and planting the garden.

It is a pity that there is now a motorway at the other side of the river and a big tsunami proof wall to protect the nearby village, affecting the idyllic view of the location.

Butsumoku Ji 佛木寺 is a group of wooden temples, with the characteristic curving up roofs, unusual window shape and intricate carvings in a peaceful location, a number of giant old camphor trees.
