In the countryside of Shikoku, there are a lot of geological interests and fascinating coastline, not very well known as tourist sites, but well worth a visit.
Inland east of Uwajima among the mountains is Nametoko gorge, with a 3 hour loop walk, it is important to get a map to know where to walk and turn. The path is reasonably good, or assisted with rope to walk across shallow water.
The area is made up of granite rock, quite rare along river, and in big sizes, very hard and well polished into big sheets or smooth surfaces, with water flowing over.
